Tumalo Canal Loop Hike

February 17 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Free

This hike is a 4+ mile lollipop/loop on single track trail comprised of compressed fine gravels. There is little change in elevation and the trail passes some enormous old growth Junipers.

The trail is within BLM’s Tumalo Canal Historic Area and is a sister project of the Maston area. The latter has quickly become one of the more popular winter and spring mountain bike areas in Central Oregon, while the Tumalo Canal Historic Area was created as a hiker-only network to preserve the historic canals.

In 1903, ranch land in this area and associated Columbia Southern Irrigation Project was advertised throughout the U.S. and abroad, promoting settlement in Central Oregon. Construction began on a 72-foot high earthen dam and a network of canals to deliver water to 27,000 acres. The project failed in 1915 when Tumalo Reservoir, filled nearly to capacity, began to drain out through the geologic fissures and cracks.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome! Dog owners please be familiar with current leash requirements of area. Hiking poles are encouraged as a means to lessen impacts on joints. Also, please bring any personal medical supplies (e.g., insulin, Epipen) you may need on the hike.

This event is not organized by OUT Central Oregon. Please contact the event organizer with any questions.
